{"id":6148,"date":"2023-04-11T12:06:38","date_gmt":"2023-04-11T12:06:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/britain-names-mi5-deputy\/"},"modified":"2023-04-11T12:07:16","modified_gmt":"2023-04-11T12:07:16","slug":"britain-names-mi5-deputy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/britain-names-mi5-deputy\/","title":{"rendered":"Britain names MI5 deputy as first female cyber spy boss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Muvija M<\/p>\n<p>LONDON (Reuters) -Britain named Anne Keast-Butler as the first female director of its intelligence communications agency GCHQ on Tuesday, tasked with protecting the country from terrorists, cyber-criminals and malign foreign powers.<\/p>\n<p>She will take over the role in May, succeeding Jeremy Fleming who is stepping down after a six-year tenure.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, who made the appointment, said Keast-Butler had an impressive track record\u202f at the heart of Britain&#8217;s national security network. &#8220;Anne will \u202fuse her vast experience to help keep the British public safe,&#8221; he said. <\/p>\n<p>She is currently \u202fdeputy director general at Britain&#8217;s domestic intelligence agency, known as MI5. <\/p>\n<p>GCHQ is Britain&#8217;s main eavesdropping agency and has a close relationship with the U.S. National Security Agency as well as with counterparts in Canada, Australia and New Zealand in a consortium called &#8220;Five Eyes&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>GCHQ, which traces its roots back to the early 20th century after the outbreak of World War One, follows MI5, three decades later, in appointing a female head. <\/p>\n<p>Stella Rimington became the first woman to lead MI5 in 1992 and was said to have inspired the casting of Judi Dench in the role of &#8220;M&#8221;, head of Britain&#8217;s foreign intelligence service known as MI6, in the James Bond movies a couple of years later.<\/p>\n<p>GCHQ provided a rare statement on its offensive cyber work earlier this month, revealing that its hackers had launched operations against militants, state-backed disinformation campaigns and attempts to interfere in elections. <\/p>\n<p>The group also works with MI6, MI5, police, the government&#8217;s defence department and overseas partners, and in the private sector and academia. <\/p>\n<p> (Reporting by Sachin Ravikumar, writing by William James and Muvija M; editing by Kate Holton, Paul Sandle and Mark Heinrich)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/britain-names-mi5-deputy\/file-photo-a-gchq-logo-on-a-wall-inside-britains\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/wp-content\/uploads\/Reuters_Direct_Media\/USOnlineReportWorldNews\/tagreuters.com2023binary_LYNXMPEJ3A0B5-VIEWIMAGE.jpg\" alt=\"tagreuters.com2023binary_LYNXMPEJ3A0B5-VIEWIMAGE\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Muvija M LONDON (Reuters) -Britain named Anne Keast-Butler as the first female director of its intelligence communications agency GCHQ on Tuesday, tasked with protecting the country from terrorists, cyber-criminals and malign foreign powers.
