{"id":5702,"date":"2023-04-11T20:03:48","date_gmt":"2023-04-11T20:03:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/south-korea-fines-google\/"},"modified":"2023-04-11T20:03:59","modified_gmt":"2023-04-11T20:03:59","slug":"south-korea-fines-google","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/south-korea-fines-google\/","title":{"rendered":"South Korea fines Google $32 million for blocking games on competing platform"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Hyunsu Yim and Heekyong Yang<\/p>\n<p>SEOUL (Reuters) -South Korea&#8217;s antitrust regulator has fined Alphabet Inc&#8217;s Google 42.1 billion won ($31.88 million) for blocking the release of mobile video games on a competitor&#8217;s platform.<\/p>\n<p>The Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) said on Tuesday that Google bolstered its market dominance, and hurt local app market One Store&#8217;s revenue and value as a platform, by requiring video game makers to exclusively release their titles on Google Play in exchange for providing in-app exposure between June 2016 and April 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Google said it will review the final decision by the KFTC to evaluate the next course of action. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Google makes substantial investments in the success of developers, and we respectfully disagree with the KFTC&#8217;s conclusions&#8221;, a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>The KFTC said the move against the U.S. technology giant is part of efforts by the government to ensure fair markets.<\/p>\n<p>Game makers affected by Google&#8217;s action include Netmarble, Nexon and NCSOFT, as well as other smaller companies, the antitrust regulator added.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, Google was fined more than 200 billion won by the KFTC for blocking customised versions of its Android operating system.<\/p>\n<p>($1 = 1,320.4200 won)<\/p>\n<p> (Reporting by Hyunsu Yim and Heekyong Yang; Editing by Kenneth Maxwell and Christian Schmollinger)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/south-korea-fines-google\/file-photo-of-a-woman-holding-her-smart-phone-which\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/wp-content\/uploads\/Reuters_Direct_Media\/USOnlineReportTechnologyNews\/tagreuters.com2023binary_LYNXMPEJ3A029-VIEWIMAGE.jpg\" alt=\"tagreuters.com2023binary_LYNXMPEJ3A029-VIEWIMAGE\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Hyunsu Yim and Heekyong Yang SEOUL (Reuters) -South Korea&#8217;s antitrust regulator has fined Alphabet Inc&#8217;s Google 42.1 billion won ($31.88 million) for blocking the release of mobile video games on a competitor&#8217;s platform.
