{"id":32733,"date":"2023-05-03T14:42:19","date_gmt":"2023-05-03T14:42:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/france-japan-sign-nuclear\/"},"modified":"2023-05-03T14:46:04","modified_gmt":"2023-05-03T14:46:04","slug":"france-japan-sign-nuclear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/france-japan-sign-nuclear\/","title":{"rendered":"France, Japan sign nuclear partnership deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By America Hernandez<\/p>\n<p>PARIS (Reuters) &#8211;     France and Japan have signed a nuclear cooperation agreement in Paris, the French ministry said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The joint declaration pledges to deepen and accelerate ties in the research and development of next-generation nuclear such as sodium-cooled fast reactors.<\/p>\n<p>Work will continue on the safe life extension of existing reactors, decommissioning of nuclear plants including Japan&#8217;s Fukushima Dai&#8217;ichi reactor, developing civil nuclear capacity in interested countries, and promoting the recycling of used nuclear fuel to minimize the need for uranium.<\/p>\n<p>French Energy Minister Agnes Pannier-Runacher met Yasutoshi Nishimura, Japan&#8217;s minister of trade, economy and industry and they discussed accelerating technical cooperation on the nuclear fuel cycle, and working to build a supply chain involving only countries sharing &#8220;common values&#8221; \u2014 a veiled reference to Russia&#8217;s outsized role in the sector.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement followed talks on the sidelines of the Group of Seven energy and climate meeting in Sapporo last month, where the ministers discussed cooperating on a relaunch of nuclear energy in Japan as a way to meet rising power demand without a spike in greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The new flags of this bilateral Franco-Japanese partnership, the Tricolor and the Hinomaru rising sun, wave strongly toward decarbonisation and a stable energy supply,&#8221; Nishimura said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s Sankei newspaper reported earlier on Wednesday that Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has earmarked some 46 billion yen ($337 million) over three years beginning in April 2024 to help develop sodium-cooled fast reactors. <\/p>\n<p>The joint declaration came a day after a Paris appeals court allowed the French government to proceed with a buyout of nuclear giant EDF as part of its long-term plan to reinvigorate the nuclear sector and build up to 14 new reactors by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>France this year also signed a bilateral agreement with Britain emphasising nuclear as a low-carbon energy source that could reduce dependence on suppliers like Russia.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p> (Reporting by America Hernandez, editing by Ed Osmond)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/france-japan-sign-nuclear\/weekly-cabinet-meeting-in-paris\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/wp-content\/uploads\/Reuters_Direct_Media\/USOnlineReportWorldNews\/tagreuters.com2023binary_LYNXMPEJ420ML-VIEWIMAGE.jpg\" alt=\"tagreuters.com2023binary_LYNXMPEJ420ML-VIEWIMAGE\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/france-japan-sign-nuclear\/file-photo-nishimura-yasutoshi-minister-of-economy-trade-and-industry\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/wp-content\/uploads\/Reuters_Direct_Media\/USOnlineReportWorldNews\/tagreuters.com2023binary_LYNXMPEJ420MM-VIEWIMAGE.jpg\" alt=\"tagreuters.com2023binary_LYNXMPEJ420MM-VIEWIMAGE\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By America Hernandez PARIS (Reuters) &#8211; France and Japan have signed a nuclear cooperation agreement in Paris, the French ministry said on Wednesday.
