{"id":24502,"date":"2023-04-26T15:01:19","date_gmt":"2023-04-26T15:01:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/asml-ceo-says-politics\/"},"modified":"2023-04-26T15:03:52","modified_gmt":"2023-04-26T15:03:52","slug":"asml-ceo-says-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/asml-ceo-says-china\/","title":{"rendered":"ASML CEO says China access &#8216;essential&#8217; as country develops semiconductor industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AMSTERDAM (Reuters) &#8211;     ASML&#8217;s CEO Peter Wennink said on Wednesday it was &#8220;logical&#8221; that China would seek to develop its own semiconductor equipment when it is restricted from purchasing tech products made abroad.<\/p>\n<p>ASML Holding NV is Europe&#8217;s largest technology firm by market capitalization and dominates the market for lithography tools &#8211; important equipment needed to make computer chips.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the company reported strong first quarter earnings and said China sales would increase as Chinese chipmakers rush to buy older tools that do not fall under U.S.-led restrictions that the Dutch government said it would adopt in March.<\/p>\n<p>Washington is seeking to slow Beijing&#8217;s technological and military advances by hobbling its semiconductor industry.<\/p>\n<p>Wennink said at ASML&#8217;s annual meeting on Wednesday that he was not worried about rivals in Japan, the U.S. or China being close to building cutting edge commercial lithography products.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But it can happen of course, so it is absolutely essential that we get to keep having market acess to China&#8221;, which is the largest market for computer chips globally. &#8220;Market access is as important to us as it is to our Chinese customers,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said policies such as subsidies in the U.S., China and Europe will lead to new manufacturing capacity that isn&#8217;t utilized at first, leading to more gluts and shortages, such as the COVID-19 pandemic shortages and the current oversupply.<\/p>\n<p>But Wennink said the global chip market will still double to $1.0 trillion-$1.2 trillion by the end of the decade.<\/p>\n<p>He said one unnamed carmaker in mainland China, ASML&#8217;s third market after Taiwan and South Korea, plans to make so many electric vehicles in the next three years that it would require &#8220;six or seven full-fledged logic semicondcutor factories&#8221; that haven&#8217;t yet been built.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p> (Reporting by Toby Sterling, Editing by Louise Heavens, Elaine Hardcastle)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/asml-ceo-says-politics\/file-photo-illustration-shows-asml-logo-3\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/wp-content\/uploads\/Reuters_Direct_Media\/USOnlineReportTechnologyNews\/tagreuters.com2023binary_LYNXMPEJ3P0KS-VIEWIMAGE.jpg\" alt=\"tagreuters.com2023binary_LYNXMPEJ3P0KS-VIEWIMAGE\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AMSTERDAM (Reuters) &#8211; ASML&#8217;s CEO Peter Wennink said on Wednesday it was &#8220;logical&#8221; that China would seek to develop its own semiconductor equipment when it is restricted from purchasing tech products made abroad.
