{"id":15970,"date":"2023-04-19T13:11:45","date_gmt":"2023-04-19T13:11:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/import-ban-pushes-pakistan\/"},"modified":"2023-04-19T13:13:31","modified_gmt":"2023-04-19T13:13:31","slug":"import-ban-pushes-pakistan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/import-ban-pushes-pakistan\/","title":{"rendered":"Import ban pushes Pakistan back to budget account surplus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Asif Shahzad<\/p>\n<p>ISLAMABAD (Reuters) &#8211;     Pakistan&#8217;s current account recorded a surplus in March, the highest in two years, the country&#8217;s central bank and market analysts said, following stringent import restrictions to manage the South Asian economy&#8217;s turmoil.<\/p>\n<p>Islamabad is trying to get an IMF bailout back on track and both sides have been engaged since early February in talks to clear a 9th review of the package agreed in 2019.    <\/p>\n<p>The bank&#8217;s statement said the current account posted a $654 million surplus in March against a deficit of $36 million the previous month. <\/p>\n<p>Mohammed Sohail of Karachi-based brokerage Topline Securities said the surplus was the highest in two years.<\/p>\n<p>Helped by the strict import ban, the current Account Deficit (CAD) contracted to $3.4 billion in July-March of the current fiscal year, which ends in June.<\/p>\n<p>It stood at $13 billion for the same period last year, the bank said.<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan imposed the import ban on luxury products and non-essential raw materials last year to avert a balance of payment crisis as foreign exchange reserves held by the bank shrank and are barely enough to cover a month of controlled imports.<\/p>\n<p>The restrictions on raw materials hit manufacturing, including of cars and cell phones, forcing some plant closures.<\/p>\n<p>The IMF wants Pakistan to get assurances on bilateral financing to fund the balance of payment gap before the lender signs a staff level agreement. <\/p>\n<p>Islamabad says allies such as China, Saudi Arabia and UAE have offered to help with financing and to roll over existing debts.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p> (Reporting by Asif Shahzad, Editing by Louise Heavens; editing by Barbara Lewis)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/import-ban-pushes-pakistan\/file-photo-a-currency-trader-counts-pakistani-rupee-notes-as-2\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/wp-content\/uploads\/Reuters_Direct_Media\/USOnlineReportEconomy\/tagreuters.com2023binary_LYNXMPEJ3I0EY-VIEWIMAGE.jpg\" alt=\"tagreuters.com2023binary_LYNXMPEJ3I0EY-VIEWIMAGE\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/import-ban-pushes-pakistan\/file-photo-a-labourer-bends-over-as-he-carries-packs\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/wp-content\/uploads\/Reuters_Direct_Media\/USOnlineReportEconomy\/tagreuters.com2023binary_LYNXMPEJ3I0GB-VIEWIMAGE.jpg\" alt=\"tagreuters.com2023binary_LYNXMPEJ3I0GB-VIEWIMAGE\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Asif Shahzad ISLAMABAD (Reuters) &#8211; Pakistan&#8217;s current account recorded a surplus in March, the highest in two years, the country&#8217;s central bank and market analysts said, following stringent import restrictions to manage the South Asian economy&#8217;s turmoil.
