{"id":15718,"date":"2023-04-19T21:10:04","date_gmt":"2023-04-19T21:10:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/uk-watchdog-looks-at\/"},"modified":"2023-04-19T21:14:14","modified_gmt":"2023-04-19T21:14:14","slug":"google-to-open-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/google-to-open-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Google to open up UK in-app payments to satisfy regulator&#8217;s concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON (Reuters) -Britain&#8217;s competition regulator said proposals from Alphabet Inc&#8217;s Google to give app developers the freedom to break away from Google Play&#8217;s billing system looked to be sufficient to address its concerns about in-app payments.<\/p>\n<p>Britain&#8217;s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said in June that Google&#8217;s complete control over in-app payments unfairly restricted developers by forcing them to use Google Play&#8217;s billing system, reducing competition and hurting users.<\/p>\n<p>The CMA said on Wednesday that Google&#8217;s proposals would allow app developers to offer a different payment system &#8220;of their choosing&#8221; or give users a choice between an alternative payment system and Google Play&#8217;s billing system.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Third-party payments providers could market their services to app developers, as per the proposal.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;We need to make sure these commitments will work in practice \u2013 so we welcome all feedback, which we will carefully consider before making a final decision,&#8221; said Ann Pope, senior director of antitrust at the CMA.<\/p>\n<p>Google said it had made the commitments after constructive conversations with the regulator.<\/p>\n<p>It said the roll out of user billing in Britain would build on its experience of offering similar systems in the European Economic Area and other parts of the world.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Under the commitments, developers will be able to add an alternative in-app billing system, alongside Google Play&#8217;s billing system, for their mobile and tablet users in the UK,&#8221; Google said in a blog post. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At checkout, users will be able to choose which billing system to use.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The CMA invited comments on Google&#8217;s proposals by May 19 before it makes a final judgment. <\/p>\n<p> (Reporting by Aby Jose Koilparambil and Yadarisa Shabong in Bengaluru and Paul Sandle in London; Editing by Shailesh Kuber, Kirsten Donovan)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/google-to-open-up\/file-photo-file-photo-the-logo-of-google-llc-is\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/wp-content\/uploads\/Reuters_Direct_Media\/USOnlineReportTechnologyNews\/tagreuters.com2023binary_LYNXMPEJ3I099-VIEWIMAGE.jpg\" alt=\"tagreuters.com2023binary_LYNXMPEJ3I099-VIEWIMAGE\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON (Reuters) -Britain&#8217;s competition regulator said proposals from Alphabet Inc&#8217;s Google to give app developers the freedom to break away from Google Play&#8217;s billing system looked to be sufficient to address its concerns about in-app payments.
