{"id":15103,"date":"2023-04-19T00:30:51","date_gmt":"2023-04-19T00:30:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/mexico-supreme-court-strikes\/"},"modified":"2023-04-19T00:37:01","modified_gmt":"2023-04-19T00:37:01","slug":"mexico-supreme-court-strikes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/mexico-supreme-court-strikes\/","title":{"rendered":"Mexico Supreme Court strikes down law to put National Guard under Army control"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MEXICO CITY (Reuters) -Mexico&#8217;s Supreme Court ruled as unconstitutional on Tuesday the transfer of control over the civilian-led National Guard to the Army, a step which had drawn criticism from activists concerned about the increasing militarization of public security.<\/p>\n<p>The court&#8217;s decision is a blow to President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who had backed a congressional reform to put the Army in charge, which passed last year.<\/p>\n<p>The reform gave the Army operational, financial and administrative control of the National Guard, which had previously been under the security ministry. <\/p>\n<p>Tuesday&#8217;s ruling passed with eight justices voting in favor and three against.<\/p>\n<p>After taking power in late 2018, Lopez Obrador created the National Guard to replace the Federal Police, which he accused of being corrupt and ineffective.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the National Guard was put under civilian control in a bid to assuage concerns over the military&#8217;s growing influence over public security.<\/p>\n<p>But Lopez Obrador later said he had changed his mind about using the armed forces in domestic law enforcement. <\/p>\n<p>During his term, the military has become increasingly influential, delivering major infrastructure projects and put in charge of monitoring ports and airports.    <\/p>\n<p>Members of the National Guard are suspected of killing two civilians on Sunday in the northern border city of Nuevo Laredo, including a pregnant teenager, an official said.<\/p>\n<p> (Reporting by Raul Cortes; Writing by Kylie Madry; Editing by Anthony Esposito, Sarah Morland and Muralikumar Anantharaman)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/mexico-supreme-court-strikes\/mexicos-senate-discusses-an-initiative-by-president-andres-manuel-lopez-2\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/wp-content\/uploads\/Reuters_Direct_Media\/USOnlineReportTopNews\/tagreuters.com2023binary_LYNXMPEJ3H0U9-VIEWIMAGE.jpg\" alt=\"tagreuters.com2023binary_LYNXMPEJ3H0U9-VIEWIMAGE\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MEXICO CITY (Reuters) -Mexico&#8217;s Supreme Court ruled as unconstitutional on Tuesday the transfer of control over the civilian-led National Guard to the Army, a step which had drawn criticism from activists concerned about the increasing militarization of public security.
