{"id":14416,"date":"2023-04-18T14:56:48","date_gmt":"2023-04-18T14:56:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/uk-regulator-probes-amazons\/"},"modified":"2023-04-18T15:02:15","modified_gmt":"2023-04-18T15:02:15","slug":"uk-regulator-probes-amazons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/uk-regulator-probes-amazons\/","title":{"rendered":"UK regulator probes Amazon&#8217;s planned purchase of iRobot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(Reuters) -Britain&#8217;s competition regulator said on Tuesday it has launched a &#8220;Phase 1&#8221; probe into Amazon.com Inc&#8217;s planned $1.7 billion acquisition of iRobot Corp, which makes the Roomba vacuum cleaner.<\/p>\n<p>The probe launch by the UK watchdog comes at a time antitrust regulators, including those in the U.S. and the European Union, have become increasingly wary of giant companies acquiring smaller rivals.<\/p>\n<p>The Amazon-iRobot deal \u2013 announced in August last year to expand the company&#8217;s stable of smart home devices \u2013 is already being reviewed by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC).<\/p>\n<p>Amazon, along with Microsoft, is currently facing an antitrust investigation in Britain after the communications regulator said some aspects of the cloud market, including fees to switch supplier, were a cause for concern.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to a Reuters request for comment, Amazon said the company was working cooperatively with the relevant regulators in their review of the merger.<\/p>\n<p>An iRobot spokesperson told Reuters that the firm continued to cooperate with both the U.S. FTC and other regulatory agencies. <\/p>\n<p>UK&#8217;s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said it had until June 16 to make its decision on whether the Amazon-iRobot deal will reduce competition in the UK.<\/p>\n<p> (Reporting by Aby Jose Koilparambil and Sinchita Mitra in Bengaluru; Editing by Savio D&#8217;Souza and Louise Heavens)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/uk-regulator-probes-amazons\/file-photo-the-amazon-logo-at-the-company-logistics-center\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lynettelockhart.com\/client\/wp-content\/uploads\/Reuters_Direct_Media\/USOnlineReportBusinessNews\/tagreuters.com2023binary_LYNXMPEJ3H0D2-VIEWIMAGE.jpg\" alt=\"tagreuters.com2023binary_LYNXMPEJ3H0D2-VIEWIMAGE\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Reuters) -Britain&#8217;s competition regulator said on Tuesday it has launched a &#8220;Phase 1&#8221; probe into Amazon.com Inc&#8217;s planned $1.7 billion acquisition of iRobot Corp, which makes the Roomba vacuum cleaner.
